Bunion Surgery in Barcelona

Bunions (hallux valgus) are a common deformity of the foot distinguished by the appearance of a protrusion on the inside of the first toe. Bunions can have various consequences such as pain, chafing or a change in the support of the sole. If you have any of these symptoms, it would be advisable to be seen by a professional foot surgeon for treatment and to help you solve the problem. To treat hallux valgus definitively, the only option is bunion surgery. At Clínica de Podología Avanzada BCN, we have years of experience behind us, ensuring excellent results.

Bunion surgery aims to correct the deformity of the foot and prevent it from forming again in the following years. With Dr. Lluís Castillo, foot surgeon in Barcelona, you will find yourself in the most professional hands that will help you solve your problem by finding the treatment that best suits you.

There are several types of bunion surgery possible. The professional foot surgeon must carry out an individualised study of each patient in order to determine the appropriate bunion surgery treatment for each person. There are two main techniques used to operate on bunions.

On the one hand, open foot surgery. With this type of bunion surgery, the deformity is corrected by making incisions in the foot and placing screws to fix the bones permanently in the correct position. Open foot surgery is an effective and precise method, but it is more invasive of the soft tissues and may lead to loss of mobility or skin difficulties.

Percutaneous foot surgery, on the other hand, is a method that, unlike open foot surgery, is minimally invasive. This bunion surgery technique consists of a 1-2 millimetre incision in the skin from which, by means of fluoroscopic control, we correct the deformity without the need for a fixation system, allowing immediate ambulation, without stitches, pain-free post-surgery period, and without the risks associated with open surgery.

Some of the main advantages of bunion surgery are that the recovery period is short, it is an outpatient surgery, so the patient returns home the same day of the intervention, the discomfort caused by the foot surgery is minimal and the patient can walk from the first day using post-surgical shoes.

Generally, 4-5 days after hallux valgus surgery, the incisions made during the operation are healed for the first time. The patient must wear a post-surgical walking shoe for approximately one month. After one month, the patient can return to normal footwear.

After about two months, the patient will have fully recovered from the surgery and will be able to resume sports or impact activities.
Through percutaneous foot surgery, a faster postoperative recovery is achieved, with a much more aesthetic result as there are no scars.
